Primary education for newcomers

In the Netherlands, children aged 4 to 12 go to primary school. It is important to enrol your child in primary education as soon as possible after arriving in the Netherlands.

Finding a school

On this website you will find all primary schools. When you enter your address (and not yet your child's date of birth), all primary schools in the neighbourhood will be shown. As soon as you have chosen a primary school (for example Kindercampus Mokum), you contact this school to arrange an introductory meeting. It is important to have the following details ready:

  • Name of your child
  • Date of arrival in Amsterdam
  • Residential address
  • Which language your child speaks
  • Your contact details

Registration and the Language School

Following your introduction to the chosen primary school, there are three options:

  • If your child is 4 or 5 years old, they will go straight to the reception class at the chosen primary school, regardless of whether your child speaks Dutch or not. Your child will then learn Dutch in the reception class.
  • If your child is older than 5 and does not yet speak Dutch, your child will first go to the newcomers group at the Language School. Here your child will learn Dutch.
  • If your child is older than 5 years and already speaks Dutch, they will go directly to the chosen primary school.

Kindercampus Mokum

Have you chosen Kindercampus Mokum as your primary school and is your child older than 5, but does not yet speak Dutch? Then we will register your child at the Taalschool of Innoord (the board to which both Kindercampus Mokum and Taalschool Innoord belong). This guarantees that the transition from the Taalschool to Kindercampus Mokum will proceed smoothly in the near future.

Intake and transition

After registering with the Language School, you will be invited for an intake interview and a start date will be agreed. On average, your child will have learned enough Dutch within one school year to attend education in Dutch at Kindercampus Mokum. The Language School and we will ensure a smooth transition from Taalschool Innoord to Kindercampus Mokum.
